At The Old State, we love great design...particularly when there's history involved.%26nbsp; And of course great design is timeless.%26nbsp; So take a look at this amazing mansion built in 1912 in Yonkers, New York that has been abandoned for years.%26nbsp; Even empty, it's a stunner.%26nbsp;

Set on 22 acres, it has been purchased by a group that restores landmark real estate.%26nbsp; And this beauty is called Alder Manor and was built by William Boyce Thompson, an extremely successful copper magnate in New York City.%26nbsp; A weekend place.%26nbsp; Wow!%26nbsp; But take a look at the incredible detail in the ceilings, the woodwork, the marble.%26nbsp; It's a showplace, and it reminds us around every corner of how great design is in fact GREAT design for the long haul.

At The Old State House of Web Design %26amp; Development, we go nuts over handmade anything.%26nbsp; And there's a guy in Dallas who has not one amazing talent, but TWO!%26nbsp; His name is Kyle Hobratschk and he makes handmade furniture that is extremely elegant and timeless and cool.%26nbsp; Chairs, drafting tables, very fine leather, amazing woods...and apparently no nails!%26nbsp; These are pieces to pass down through generations.%26nbsp; True works of art.%26nbsp;

Saint Ann Restaurant is a "must visit often" Dallas destination!

By now you know that at The Old State House of Web Design %26amp; Development, we know a good thing when we see it.%26nbsp; But we also know it when we taste it, and delicious is in abundance at Saint Ann Restaurant Bar %26amp; Garden in uptown in Dallas.%26nbsp;%26nbsp;

This unusual restaurant you'll love is in a converted former school and it is highly worthy of some very special mention.....excellent!%26nbsp; Plus, Saint Ann's artistic decor, brilliant design and outdoor patio area are something to see.%26nbsp; If it's a beautiful evening, beeline it to this patio.%26nbsp; If the weather isn't being nice, then go inside and the restaurant is one of the most interesting you'll find anywhere. %26nbsp; Quite frankly, it's now our favorite casual dining experience in Dallas or Fort Worth.%26nbsp; Great date place, great "hanging out" at a civilized bar place as well.%26nbsp; They will soon also house the world's largest collection of Samurai artifacts upstairs in an artistically inspired museum.%26nbsp;%26nbsp;

But wait, we're not finished....not by a long shot.%26nbsp; Back to the patio.%26nbsp; The outdoor area at Saint Ann is simply the best in Dallas.%26nbsp; Period.%26nbsp; No discussion.%26nbsp; A huge outdoor area and bar, an inspired elongated fireplace, an interesting assortment of giant urns and fountains worked within the equally inspired landscaping.%26nbsp;%26nbsp; And as you enter the restaurant from there,%26nbsp; you'll experience a large see-thru acrylic floor with an unusual view of the planks below.%26nbsp; This cool factor forms the floor of the large bar which, quite frankly, is one of the most relaxing you'll find.%26nbsp; Any and every beverage known to man is concocted here too...and we love it!

So, if it's for a lunch or dinner inside, a business meeting or a summer evening happy hour or meal at the incredible outdoor bar and patio, make sure to experience it.%26nbsp; It's within a stone throw from the Crescent Court Hotel and the American Airlines Center, and it really is a special place.%26nbsp; We are nuts for their fish sandwiches and flat bread gourmet (but affordable) delicacies.%26nbsp; But virtually everything on the menu is very tasty and artfully presented.%26nbsp; And really priced quite fairly.%26nbsp; The Taco Trio is very interesting for lunch for only $10. %26nbsp;%26nbsp; And don't get us started on the wine selection.%26nbsp; Wow.%26nbsp;

As you know, at The Old State House of Web Design %26amp; Development....we love design.%26nbsp; And nowhere is it on more stunning display than on the ground floor of the Dallas Museum of Art in "The Fashion World of John Paul Gaultier:%26nbsp; From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk" exhibit....WOW!%26nbsp; It is brilliant.%26nbsp; First of all,%26nbsp; the fashion designer John Paul Gaultier has an extraordinary imagination.%26nbsp;%26nbsp;

The clothes are fantastic, even including actual outfits Madonna wore during her most famous tours, and Lady Gaga in the video she shared with Beyonce.%26nbsp; Incredible to see.%26nbsp; But what is equally spellbinding is the fact that each mannequin has projected onto the face moving images of actual human faces.%26nbsp; You feel the mannequin...and the show...are alive.%26nbsp; It is thrilling. %26nbsp;

The show is on through February 12th!%26nbsp; We hate to be bossy, but do NOT miss it.%26nbsp; Stunning.

I love so many things about the fall...the change of weather and relief of cooler temperatures, college football, the World Series (especially this year; GO RANGERS!), hooded sweatshirts, Halloween...

One of my absolute favorite things about the fall, though, is that it means it's time for the State Fair of Texas! We try to go every year at The Old State, but somehow we missed last year. So, of course, we were extra excited to go this year. The combination of being outdoors, eating foods that you would never ever consider eating anywhere else (funnel cake is my personal favorite), the sounds of the rides and barkers in the Midway, and all the multitude of smells, both good and bad provide both a stress relief and a creative inspiration unlike any other. Thanks, Big Tex, for another great year!

A few fun facts about the State Fair of Texas...

%26#8226;The State Fair of Texas opened its gates for the first time on October 26, 1886. Approximately 14,000 people attend the opening day.

And quite frankly, virtually every space designed by Laura Hunt of Dallas gives us that rush....times ten! %26nbsp;Wow, she is brilliant and never disappoints. Her work is somehow all at once current, timeless, elegant and stunning! %26nbsp;If you haven't seen her work,%26nbsp; make sure to Google her. She's amazing. Her design sensibilities and eye for all things spectacular are genius!%26nbsp; And Laura Hunt is no follower, she's a trailblazer at the highest levels of fine interior design.

Make no mistake, we cannot take credit for the discovery of Laura Hunt. She is widely known, highly respected,%26nbsp; and has been in Architectural Digest and many other renowned publications for her work. And the really great thing about Laura is that with each project she continues to deliver work that keeps raising the bar higher and higher. We're huge fans.%26nbsp;

V-Spa at Hilton Anatole is Heaven on Earth!

You now know that we love quality in design, fine art, new tech gadgets, and anything and everything that's unique or unexpected. %26nbsp; But wow, we never thought we'd find it all in one place!%26nbsp; And that would be V-Spa at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas.%26nbsp; The hotel is located at 2201 Stemmons Freeway, and V-Spa is on the 2nd floor of the Verandah Club (the two story building that runs along the huge outdoor space by the towers).%26nbsp; It is stunning!

OK, I've searched and searched my brain for a word that describes it...and the only word that fits is spectacular!%26nbsp; PaperCity Magazine gave me a gift certificate and I tried it out.%26nbsp; And I'm sure glad I did.%26nbsp; I am still so relaxed from their wonderful treatment of me. %26nbsp;

Now for details.%26nbsp; First of all, it's a gorgeous space.%26nbsp; Really beautiful and peaceful.%26nbsp; And that music!%26nbsp; It lulls you into a perpetual state of peace and love.%26nbsp; They immediately offered me a luxe chamomile tea that was outstanding.%26nbsp; And no, this was no ordinary tea bag off the shelf either.%26nbsp; It was of the highest quality and artfully presented in every way. %26nbsp; Then they lovingly placed a warm pillow thing around my neck and I quickly became butter!%26nbsp; Very relaxing. %26nbsp; Then they gave me a manicure and pedicure straight from Heaven itself. %26nbsp; They don't rush,%26nbsp; everyone is very friendly, and their prices are not out of the stratosphere.%26nbsp; I felt thoroughly pampered.%26nbsp;

But make no mistake, V-Spa doesn't just deliver fantastic spa services like facials, massages, manicures, pedicures and everything else you can imagine.%26nbsp; VSpa also delivers stunning architecture, art and interior design!%26nbsp; So not only is your body in feel-good heaven, your eyes are also in for a treat as well.%26nbsp; The manager is Sarah Long and she's lovely.%26nbsp; The front desk is artfully and kindly run by William Hensel, and I was in the wonderful and caring hands of the ever delightful Rosette El Khoury for my manicure and pedicure. %26nbsp; Superb!

Steve Jobs...A Remarkable Life Well Lived!!!

At The Old State, we have all long revered the remarkable Steve Jobs and his amazing accomplishments.%26nbsp; He created the most valuable corporation in the world, many thousands of jobs, the most stunning technological devices, gadgets and developments%26nbsp; the world has ever known.%26nbsp; He has been the catalyst for some of the most successful and entertaining movies of all time, some of the most stunning design inspirations of all time,%26nbsp; and continued to push forward%26nbsp; through many dark times without ever losing his vision, or his midas touch.%26nbsp; %26nbsp;

But to us, Steve Jobs never merely pushed forward, he charged forward with zeal and brilliance at every turn. %26nbsp; And each and every time with an incredible force of will, from an amazing and endless supply of forethought,%26nbsp; and charisma.%26nbsp; Add into the mix he always thrilled us with not just the remarkable technology, but also the brilliant%26nbsp; design.%26nbsp; And to remember this incredible life was all packed into only 56 years from start to finish. %26nbsp; Fantastic!%26nbsp; And many of his largest contributions were created and launched while fighting a courageous battle with cancer.%26nbsp; Unbelievable!%26nbsp;

But make no mistake.%26nbsp; His passing is not the end.%26nbsp; It's only the beginning of the roller coaster ride that will be his legacy.%26nbsp; But Steve Jobs' iconic roller coaster ride%26nbsp; will only go further up into the stratosphere with every passing year.%26nbsp; We believe the legend that is Steve Jobs will only increase over time as we all fully come to grips with his staggering contribution to music, to film, to technology, to business.%26nbsp; But most important,%26nbsp; to mankind. %26nbsp;

In a world full of amazing technological bells and whistles, Steve Jobs will always be the cherry on top.%26nbsp; May he rest in peace.%26nbsp; %26nbsp;

The Nasher Sculpture Center a Cultural Masterpiece!

Is there a more beautiful and interesting sculpture museum in all the world than the Nasher Sculpture Center?%26nbsp; No, there's not.%26nbsp; The Nasher wins this prize, and they win it hands down. %26nbsp;And if you haven't been there?%26nbsp; Don't walk, RUN to experience it for yourself!%26nbsp; In a world which now offers %26nbsp;a sea of cultural wonderfulness, the Nasher Sculpture Center is one of the undisputed cherries on top.%26nbsp;%26nbsp; %26nbsp;

The seeds for the Nasher Sculpture Center in downtown Dallas were planted in the early 50's, when Raymond and Patsy Nasher started collecting ethnographic and archaeological works.%26nbsp; They also acquired a number of important American modernist works during that time.%26nbsp; And they never looked back. %26nbsp; Fast forward to present day and you can clearly tell they collected with zeal.%26nbsp; And let's not leave out the passion.....because the collection and building are highly inspired.%26nbsp; %26nbsp; Excellence shows at every turn in this stunning travertine masterpiece of a building.

And just how brilliant has the Nasher Sculpture Center built it's current collection? Well, the show-stopper art now in residence includes major works by Henry Moore, Picasso, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Carl Andre, Alexander Archipenko, Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, Jeff Koons and many others.%26nbsp; Throw in a stunningly unique and beautiful structure designed by famous architect Renzo Piano%26nbsp; and you've got a thriller of an experience which can't be missed.%26nbsp; Still under the careful stewardship of the Nasher family and Director Jeremy Strick, this is a cultural gem of the highest order.%26nbsp; %26nbsp;

OK, by now you can tell we are devoted fans of the Nasher Sculpture Center here at The Old State House of Web Design %26amp; Development.%26nbsp; After all, great design and fine art like they deliver there will always thrill us.%26nbsp; But did I mention they have the best house-made potato chips on planet earth in their Nasher Cafe?%26nbsp; Yes, indeed they do. This cafe is a cool and relaxing place to disappear...overlooking a sweeping sculptural garden (with pools and fountains extraordinaire) just beyond the window.%26nbsp; Ahh, a wonderful and peaceful escape.%26nbsp; And quite frankly, %26nbsp;a slice of Heaven right in downtown Dallas.

The gift shop is also very inspired. %26nbsp; It sells %26nbsp;creative and artful objects and gifts %26nbsp;you simply can't find anywhere else. %26nbsp; The items I've bought there always get noticed.%26nbsp; Interesting watches, books, jewelry, sculptural fare, elegant trinkets from the far corners of the imagination.%26nbsp; In a quandary %26nbsp;for what to get the person who has everything?%26nbsp; Relax.%26nbsp; Just go to their gift shop.%26nbsp; Problem solved! %26nbsp;

We are so proud to have been chosen to launch Michelle Nussbaumer's new site for her Ceylon et Cie. Amazing Party at Amazing Gregory's Shoes in NorthPark Center

Wow, we attended the most amazing party last night in NorthPark Center at Gregory's Shoes, located just outside Neiman Marcus. %26nbsp; Our friends and clients Larry, Leslie, Gregg, Jon and Monique of Gregory's presented the infinitely talented Erykah Badu, but in the role of DJ at this party. %26nbsp; And she was excellent. %26nbsp; First of all, %26nbsp;Badu is a living sculpture, %26nbsp;stunning to look at. Always so stylish and creative and sophisticated in her appearance. %26nbsp; %26nbsp;Badu is interesting on so many levels it's remarkable actually.%26nbsp; Of course, everyone with a pulse knows that Badu's musical career is now legendary.%26nbsp; But she's also a highly inspired guest DJ when she appears as "DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown" as her pseudonym.%26nbsp; Master of Ceremonies Fonzworth Bentley was also on his A-game.%26nbsp; It was funk on fire last night at Gregory's...and very cool to experience. %26nbsp;

The party was to benefit Beautiful Love Incorporated Nonprofit Development (B.L.I.N.D.). Twenty percent of the evening's total sales and one hundred percent of the sale of each t-shirt designed by artist Raghava KK benefitted the 2011 launch of B.L.I.N.D's After School DJ Program %26amp; Camp for Kids.%26nbsp; The party pulled in some of the most stylish people from Dallas....or anywhere for that matter.%26nbsp; And it was fitting too, because Gregory's has the most beautiful and creative shoes on the planet.%26nbsp; Incredible.%26nbsp; The shoes are like sculptural works of art as well.%26nbsp; Exquisite detail, quality and design.%26nbsp; The store also has%26nbsp; remarkable accessories and clothing for both men and women.%26nbsp; Make sure to drop by. %26nbsp;You'll be glad you did, because Gregory's is supremely special!

OK, how about those party details?%26nbsp; Like the music, the cocktails and food were similarly inspired.%26nbsp; Wendy Krispin, as always, delivered stunning and delicious fare that had me chasing wait staff for more, who were always professional and attentive. %26nbsp;When Wendy does the party, everyone leaves delighted and satisfied. %26nbsp;Hennessy was the sponsor of the event, and the unique signature drinks they concocted had me asking for the recipe for home. %26nbsp;Delicious!

All and all a fantastic and very special night. %26nbsp;

I could go on and on....and probably will.....but in a nutshell to be in Smink is to be in a perpetual state of modern design euphoria.%26nbsp; Fine furnishings, fine art, colors from the Heavens.%26nbsp; Mix this in with very enjoyable owners and it's a delicious recipe we highly recommend.%26nbsp; %26nbsp;

Although you'll be surrounded in splendor at every turn there, you will also feel right at home.%26nbsp; Sisters Jennifer Smink, Autumn Smink and Dawn Smink-Gibson are as infinitely knowledgeable, helpful and delightful to be around as you can imagine. Autumn immediately handed us a cup of coffee clearly created by the java gods, and then our journey through sumptuous fabrics, buttery leathers, %26nbsp; exquisite finishes, illustrious colors and classic clean lines made for one thrilling shopping experience.%26nbsp; Quite frankly, it's the kind of place where you could buy everything for a timeless showplace of modern design in one swoop. %26nbsp;It's that special. %26nbsp; %26nbsp;

Marquee Grill in Dallas a Culinary and Art Deco Masterpiece!

The people who said that things are bigger in Texas were only partly right.%26nbsp; Because they're also better!%26nbsp; And nowhere is this on more brilliant display than in legendary Highland Park Village at the new Marquee Grill!%26nbsp; WOW!!%26nbsp;

We met our%26nbsp; friend and partner Jim Kastleman of PaperCity Magazine the other night and it was great!%26nbsp; And I mean food, drinks, atmosphere, the works.%26nbsp; The company wasn't bad either, as PR dynamo Lindsey Miller dropped by and cracked us up. She's%26nbsp; simply lovely.%26nbsp; And if the question is "is there anyone more fun to be around in Dallas or Houston than Jim Kastleman?".....the answer is no.%26nbsp; Because he has undoubtedly held the #1 spot for awhile now.%26nbsp; (Good idea to meet at Marquee Grill Jim!)

I knew Marquee Grill was getting many national accolades, but I had not been.%26nbsp; But now I know what all the hoopla is about.%26nbsp; As they say, reputations are built one meal at a time.%26nbsp; And everything we had was really special.%26nbsp; Steaks, lobster ceviche, fresh homemade bread, unusual and refreshing cocktails. Major YUM factor.%26nbsp; Top Chef Tre Wilcox and his staff have certainly raised the bar high here.%26nbsp; I ask you, how do they please so many people so many nights in a row?%26nbsp; Whatever it is, it's working.%26nbsp; But the crowds were manageable and we met new friends we'll definitely keep.

Marquee Grill is the latest effort from Twomey Concepts, and somebody knows how to please.%26nbsp;%26nbsp;%26nbsp;%26nbsp; Celebrity/bartender/proprietor Jason Kosmas and partner Dushan Zaric are the inspired Marquee Grill aficionados.%26nbsp;%26nbsp; And let me tell you something right now, they leave no stone unturned to thrill you.%26nbsp; Or rather no delicious earthly morsel unturned!%26nbsp; We probably embarrassed ourselves with moans and groans of culinary ecstasy.%26nbsp;

Marquee Grill has this unusual and lush (but comfortable) Art Deco meets Mid-Century vibe that makes you want to stay awhile!%26nbsp; And we did.%26nbsp;%26nbsp; The two story and meandering space is right next to the historic Village Theatre in Highland Park Village, and it's quickly become the see-and-be-seen spot in Dallas.%26nbsp; But make no mistake, this one promises to become a long timer.%26nbsp; It's a classic, it's here to stay.%26nbsp;%26nbsp;%26nbsp;

Be warned....the food and attentive service will seduce you rather quickly.%26nbsp;%26nbsp; My lobster ceviche had me at hello.%26nbsp; But Marquee features a progressive New American menu, as well as wood fired steaks and chops. The lunch menu has a variety of entr%26#233;e salads, sandwiches and their famous Burger.%26nbsp; Famous doesn't come from just saying so, it comes from taking one bite out of this burger!!%26nbsp;%26nbsp; Kosmas has developed an extensive list of hand crafted cocktails reminiscent of a bygone era too. The wine and scotch list is becoming renowned.%26nbsp; So enjoy!

The d%26#233;cor at Marquee Grill is comfortably elegant with a strong nod to 1930%26#8217;s Art Deco architecture, which we have always loved here at The Old State.%26nbsp; Art Deco will always be in style, and it shines at this restaurant.%26nbsp; There are many different places to hang out, have a drink, have a meeting, make new friends.%26nbsp;%26nbsp;%26nbsp; The downstairs dining room is a bit more formal, with the second floor dining room catering to a casual experience.%26nbsp;

Yes, Marquee Grill is beautiful.%26nbsp; But no, it's not stuffy.%26nbsp; It reminds me of what a cool place in New York or Paris from the 20's or 30's would have been like.%26nbsp; Ultimately casual with a luxe feel, you will feel right at home here for a special date or night out.%26nbsp; The large bar upstairs has comfortable couches, booths and many bar stools. The Village Theatre%26#8217;s marquee serves double duty as the bar%26#8217;s balcony providing you with the best view in Highland Park.%26nbsp; Thus the restaurant name.%26nbsp;

Bravo Marquee Grill!%26nbsp; You take the cake of all cakes for quality, design and YUM factor!!%26nbsp; Consider us fans.%26nbsp; And we might just go back again tonight!
